Absorbers of electromagnetic waves work on a principle of magnetic and dielectric losses in a material (imaginary components of permeability and dielectricity). But we also have to ensure the adequate surface impedance, so there is no significant reflection of electromagnetic waves on a contact between air and absorber’s surface. Harmonization of both demands (adequate damping and impedance) greatly influences the usefulness of homogeneous absorbers. For this reason, the use of multilayer absorbers is a common approach to this problem. With the proper combination of different materials in multiple layers we can achieve sufficiently good characteristics. For optimization of composition of multilayer absorber we use an ant-stigmergy based algorithm.
